"We keep Dresden moving" is the motto of the Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe (DVB), Dresden's public transport operator. Making sure that around half a million passengers get to their destinations on trams, buses, cable railways and ferries every day is a challenge. To do so, the DVB relies on sound planning using PTV Visum and gets the city on board, too – to provide attractive mobility for an attractive state capital.

With around 540,000 residents, Dresden is a growing city of business, science and culture. This success is surely due to the 1,800 employees at Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe, because quality of life is largely dependent on accessibility within the city and its surrounding areas.
One of the DVB's objectives is to work in the most cost-effective way possible. The company has impressive results in this regard as well, with an average cost recovery rate of around 80%.
The best accessibility and cost-recoverable operations are possible when every route is regularly reviewed and the assessments are fed into future-oriented planning.

The DVB laid the foundations for this 20 years ago, by introducing PTV Visum to evaluate transport surveys.
In the meantime, PTV Visum has grown – and planning in Dresden has, too.
Currently, the DVB and the state city council are working on the basis of one integrated transport model – with a forecast horizon of 2030.

JOINT PLANNING FOUNDATION
The aim of the integrated transport model is to visualise infrastructural and spatial changes and make their impact on demand for public transport and private transport measurable.
One advantage of using PTV Visum is the ability to represent all modes in one system. This means that the trams, buses and ferries, as well as light rail and re-gional rail within the network of the DVB, are all integrated in one model. In addi-tion, private transport and commercial transport are also represented.
The Dresden planning area is divided into around 550 zones in Dresden itself, 350 zones in the surrounding area and around 40 cordons. It incorporates ap-proximately 30,000 links and 12,000 nodes.
Whether it is the construction of the Waldschlößchen bridge or the extension of the tram network alongside the university, in a joint network, the impact on all variables is immediately visible.

DIFFERENTIATED DEMAND CALCULATION
The DVB makes particular use of the transport model as a basis for calculating demand forecasts. If particular changes in demand are expected, they can be fed directly into route and line network planning.

As well as an analysis of long-term effects, short-term measures, such as traffic management during major construction work, can also be considered directly.
To maintain and improve the quality of their service, the DVB regularly conducts transport surveys, ticket sales -and structural data analyses. For these, too, the transport model in PTV Visum provides an important foundation.

If certain sections of the model need to be examined in greater detail, the DVB uses PTV Vissim. This enables them to seamlessly transfer parts of the network from PTV Visum and examine them on a microscopic scale in PTV Vissim.

SERVICE FIT FOR THE FUTURE
The optimisation of the bus network is one of the most significant projects that the DVB has completed. To do this, a transport flow analysis was used to compare public transport with private transport. It sought to investigate rela-tion-based traffic volumes and travel times on city district level with regard to further potential.

Thanks to an assessment using PTV Visum, deficits in connection and speed in the bus network could be resolved and new passengers were attracted.

"The long road towards achieving the best customer satisfaction rates regard-ing line and route network has been a result of, among other things, our inten-sive work with the integrated transport model," confirms Mirko Rüde, Head of Market and Quality Research at DVB AG. He is optimistic about the future: "If we keep improving our public transport, this can enable a 'city-friendly' increase in traffic."
