Project description:
PTV Vissim was used to model the highway network that was impacted upon by changes related to the 2012 Olympic Games both physical and in terms of traffic demand. Base models of the existing highway network were first created, calibrated and validated according to TfL standards. Testing was then undertaken to assess the impact of changes, such as lanes being allocated to the Olympic Route Network (ORN), the introduction of vehicle check points and additional pedestrian facilities. The large number of specific vehicle categories and the specific and individual routing and timing of each was a challenging aspect of the project as was the effect of merging traffic related to the introduction of the ORN lanes.

Through an iterative process of adjusting, testing and re-adjusting the signal timings of traffic lights in the network, the impact of the changes was minimized in the model and during the event itself.
